Album review: Athame “With Cunning Fire and Adversarial Resolve”

Athame’s “With Cunning Fire and Adversarial Resolve” is the musical equivalent of a horror movie. It’s terrifying and terrific at the same time.

Athame’s “With Cunning Fire and Adversarial Resolve” is a brutal, haunting album. An eerie, nightmarish atmosphere is present on all the tracks on the album. This is vicious stuff and it is great. At times the music terrorises the listener with its fast-paced guitar riffing and haunting vocals. Not for the fainthearted. But for those of us who like our metal extreme, this works a treat. It is mainly music played at a furious speed, but when Athame slows down, it is still heavy, tormented and evil.

There are some echoes of the darker and heavier side of Black Sabbath here. Athame’s music is firmly based in black metal but it also has influences from death and even doom metal on this menacing album. This is without doubt one of the year’s best extreme metal albums so far.

Athame’s “With Cunning Fire and Adversarial Resolve” will be released on Grimoire Records on 8th July.
