Lucifer’s panic attack in Tokyo
Johanna Platow of Lucifer: “All the songs are about dead people. Something’s wrong with me!”
Lucifer at Club Quattro, Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan on 5th December 2024
“All the songs are about dead people. Something’s wrong with me” said Johanna Platow on stage in Tokyo when Lucifer once again summoned their Japanese fallen angels to an evening of hellraising. She introduced another song by saying: “This is a love song…to a corpse.” The weird and wonderful world of the band Lucifer is never dull.
German High Priestess Johanna Platow founded the band in Berlin in 2014. Some early band members included Gaz Jennings of Cathedral and Andy Prestidge of Angel Witch. Later, she brought in her Swedish husband Nicke Andersson (The Hellacopters, Entombed, Death Breath, Imperial State Electric) on drums. Soon the band had Stockholm as its base and all members apart from Johanna are now Swedish.
Between Nicke at the back and Johanna up front, the three Swedish stringed musketeers of doom – Martin Nordin and Linus Björklund on guitars and Harald Göthblad on bass – entertained the Tokyo audience with some fantastic coordinated Status Quo-style guitar moves.
The band last played in Japan in June 2019. Since then the band has released three full-length studio albums overflowing with great new songs. Thus, it was a welcome return to Tokyo by a band that has found its own death-obsessed musical path. The Tokyo show marked the end of the “Satanic Panic” world tour. The music is heavy and doomy in a Black Sabbath way but with beautiful dreamy-yet-sad melodies like Fleetwood Mac or Jefferson Airplane. It is an attractive mix of influences from the 60s and 70s. Somehow it doesn’t sound dated.
The show opened strongly with “Crucifix”, “Ghosts” and “Midnight Phantom”. Expectations were met and succeeded. The show stayed on that high level throughout the evening. The Tokyo audience was with them all the way. The show went on with a flawless setlist, including favourites such as “Mausoleum”, “Riding Reaper”, “Leather Demon”, “Fallen Angel”, “Wild Hearses”, “Coffin Fever”, “At the Mortuary”, “Slow Dance in a Crypt” and “Cemetery Eyes”. The evening was rounded off in style with “Dreamer”, “California Son” and “Reaper on Your Heels”.
