Basement death metal: Open Surgery “Absolute Destruction”

Old-school Florida death metal from Sweden. Finspång’s finest, Open Surgery, serves up glorious meat-and-potatoes basement death metal on its new album.

I have loved the Swedish death metal band Open Surgery since I first heard them in 2016. They are proper. Their love for what they do shines through in the music. This band makes no compromises. It is a Swedish interpretation of old-school Florida death metal. It is glorious meat-and-potatoes basement death metal. Nothing’s polished. The band was founded in Finspång, Sweden in 2012 and released its first full-length studio album, “Experiments of Excessive Torture”, in 2013. On the new nine-track album, the band’s fourth release, “Absolute Destruction”, the clock is standing still. The music may have been created in Sweden in recent times, but the sound is very much like that of 1989 in Florida. This is stenchy, damp music of the best kind. The sun may shine in Florida, but not in this Swedish basement. Among the beautifully grinding songs are “Psychotic Flamethrower Maniac”, “Ring of Absolute Destruction” and the face-melting “Sub-Zero Suffocation”. “Ceremonial Collector of Skulls” is my favourite track (not least because of its excellent guitar solo) on a solid record with no dips. This band does not evolve and neither should they. Long may they create and perform meat-and-potatoes basement death metal. Who needs evolution when you have Open Surgery?
