Power metal at its best: HammerFall “Avenge the Fallen”

Swedish power metal band HammerFall is back with its 13th studio album. If catchy and bombastic power metal is your thing, HammerFall’s new album will not disappoint.

Unlike some other bands in the power metal subgenre of heavy metal. HammerFall does not play too fast (hello, Dragonforce!) and the band doesn’t go too deep into fantasy land with dragons and kings. Well, there is some of that but not in an over-the-top annoying way. It is more battle stories of the Manowar kind. This band is essentially an ode to catchy and energetic metal. HammerFall is primarily a band that plays good-natured power metal. It is now one of power metal’s veteran acts. While they have grown older, the band members still deliver.

“Hail to the King” is HammerFall at its bombastic best. It’s a fist-in-the-air and shout-along kind of anthem. It is just the way we want our HammerFall music served. The album is solid. I like the high-energy tracks best, but of course, this genre has a place for power ballads like “Hope Springs Eternal”. Among the high-energy song highlights are “Burn It Down”, “Freedom”, “The End Justifies” and “Rise of Evil”. “Avenge the Fallen” is the band’s 13th studio album since the band was formed in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1993. The current line-up consists of guitarists Oscar Dronjak and Pontus Norgren, vocalist Joacim Cans, bassist Fredrik Larsson and drummer David Wallin. The band is still at peak level. The “Avenge the Fallen” album is a celebration of the power metal genre. Let the Hammer Fall! Long live catchy and bombastic power metal!

HammerFall’s “Avenge the Fallen” will be out on 9th August via Nuclear Blast Records.
