Electric Boys at Skogsröjet
Groove to the max when Electric Boys rocked Sweden’s best rock festival.
Electric Boys at the Skogsröjet festival in Rejmyre, Sweden on 2nd August 2024
Electric Boys has the most swagger in the Swedish rock scene. Their swagger was there from the start which was evident when they released their first single “All Lips ‘N’ Hips” in 1987. Over the years, the band has shown us that the swagger (as in confident and not in an arrogant way) is backed up by quality and skills. The debut album “Funk-O-Metal Carpet Ride” was released in 1989. I have great memories of seeing them perform live a few times in those early years.
The current explosive line-up of Electric Boys consists of Conny Bloom on lead vocals and guitar, Andy Christell on bass, Slim Martin Thomander on guitar and Jolle Atlagic on drums. The band’s latest album “Grand Explosivos” came out in 2023. Conny and Andy were members of the final line-up of the Finnish band Hanoi Rocks in 2005-2009 (oh, the memories of that decadent final Japan tour!). They brought drummer Jolle from Hanoi Rocks when the reestablished Electric Boys needed a new drummer a few years later. The fact that three of the band’s four members have been in Hanoi Rocks has seasoned the band. They were always good. The mature and more experienced version of Electric Boys is even better.
The song “Groovus Maximus” from 1992 sums up this band eloquently. It is groove rock to the max. Musically, they swerve between hard rock, blues rock, roots rock and Beatles-que 60s pop. But it is always groovy. It is Electric Boys. And it is bloody good. The show at Skogsröjet featured a fair bit of newer material. Among the best songs in the set were “Domestic Bliss” from the latest album, “Tumblin’ Dominoes” (with splendid Neil Young and Tom Petty vibes) and “Super God” from 2021’s “Ups!de Down” album and “Hangover in Hannover” from 2018’s “The Ghost Ward Diaries”. It was a show which firmly established that these groovy lads do not just tour the early hits. They have built up a treasure trove of songs and have released some smoking albums in recent years. It is refreshing to see a band that wants to play more than one song from recent releases. Exquisite is the word.
