Vhäldemar entertained Tokyo with catchy metal
Spanish band Vhäldemar entertained Tokyo with their tongue-in-cheek take on power metal.
Vhäldemar at Hatsudai Doors, Tokyo, Japan on 9th October 2024
Vhäldemar came to perform in Tokyo as part of a Spanish tour package featuring Rise to Fall and Bloodhunter. The band already has a quarter of a century of experience, including releasing seven full-length studio albums. Its most recent album, “Sanctuary of Death”, was released in May. They opened the Tokyo show with two songs from their new album, “Dreambreaker” and “Devil’s Child”. The set also featured “Old King’s Visions (Part VII)” and “Heavy Metal” from the new album. The rest of the setlist consisted of older favourites such as “Metalizer”, “The Old Man”, “Howling at the Moon” and “Breakin’ All the Rules”. Musically, Vhäldemar lives somewhere between classic heavy metal and power metal. It is powerful yet catchy music. Many of the songs have an anthem-like quality to them. As is often the case in the world of power metal, there are lyrical themes involving battles, warriors and kings.
Frontman Carlos Escudero reminded me somewhat of legendary Quiet Riot frontman Kevin DuBrow. On stage in Tokyo, Carlos displayed the same kind of tongue-in-cheek showmanship and craziness that established DuBrow as one of the heavy metal genre’s most entertaining showmen. Carlos put on an enjoyable performance. He backed up the unhinged behaviour with great vocals that fit the band’s music like a glove. The rest of this excellent band consists of Pedro J. Monge on guitar, Raul Serrano on bass, Jon Koldo Tera on keyboards and Jandro Tukutake on drums. It was great to see a band having fun on stage while at the same time delivering a first-class metal show.
It was a high-energy and enjoyable performance by a great band here to entertain us. If you want to headbang, shout along, play air guitar and celebrate in the name of heavy metal, this is a band for you.
