Tobias Sammet’s Avantasia “Here Be Dragons”
Tobias Sammet is back with his star-studded Avantasia rock’n’roll extravaganza.
It’s now more than a quarter of a century since Edguy’s German vocalist Tobias Sammet came up with the concept for Avantasia. Initially, it was a studio project. But in 2008 it became a fantastic live show as well. “Here Be Dragons” is Avantasia’s tenth studio album. It is as good as expected. On the album’s opening track, Tobias Sammet sings “Welcome to the creepshow”. I wouldn’t call these fine artists creeps, but Avantasia is a fantastic project that welcomes you to its rock’n’roll circus. The concept of bringing in some of the best artists in hard rock and heavy metal to contribute to Avantasia’s albums and live shows is still working a treat. Avantasia’s music, while varies, is essentially melodic hard rock. It is catchy and overflowing with energy. The different voices keep things interesting throughout.
Queensrÿche legend Geoff Tate sings lead on the album’s fine title track. Geoff’s voice is intact. By now he is a vital part of the Avantasia family. Kamelot is represented by its current frontman Tommy Karevik and its original frontman Roy Kahn. Both the Scandinavian singers make terrific contributions. Two other Scandinavian singers, Kenny Leckremo (H.E.A.T) and Ronnie Atkins (Pretty Maids) also make great appearances. So does Helloween’s Micheal Kiske and Magnum’s Bob Catley. Somehow, Tobias Sammet always manages to recruit the best voices. He also gets the best out of them. It is an eclectic mix of voices and personalities but the melting pot comes together nicely. The highlight is the Adrienne Cowan-sung “Avalon”. The Seven Spires vocalist joined Avantasia many years ago as the least-known name in a star-studded line-up of vocalists. She has long ago earned her spot. She has established herself as a star that always delivers. Oh, how this fine vocalist keeps impressing me!
A tip of the hat to Tobias Sammet for yet another excellent chapter in the Avantasia story. Well done!
Avantasia’s “Here Be Dragons” will be released via Napalm Records on 28th February. The Japanese edition is released by Marquee/Avalon.
